Bathroom Tile Project

I'm want to install tile in my bathroom where there is currently a vinyl floor. My question is can I lay my backer board directly over the vinyl? Should I put mortar below the backer board or can I simply lay it over the vinyl. I have 3/4" subfloor on 16" centers.

Vinyl, and 1/4 underlayment or pratical board has to go.

It's a pretty simple 5x5 bathroom floor so I will only have 1 seam in the bathroom. I went to 2 local home improvement stores and 1 said just screw it down over the vinyl and the other said to remove the vinyl then put mortar before laying the backer board.

Think about it, has the person you talked to ever even layed tile before?
Last place anyone should be getting advice is from a box store.
Stick with my story, any 1/4 underlayment needs to go as well as the linolium.
Yes thin set goes under the 1/4 tile board.
