basement floor
I have a townhouse that was built in 01/02. I am in the process of finishing the basement into two rooms, laundry and family. In the laundry I would like to put vinyl tile, and in the family room I would like to place carpet and tile around the bar. What type of vapor barrier if needed would you place down? would you raise the floor. Would you just place a carpet pad down? Just want to get ideas.. Thanks....

In my area they just lay the carpet and pad on top of the concrete. Tile is stuck directly to concrete and same with vinyl.

You may already have a vapor barrier under the concrete. If so, you don't want to add one on top. A double vapor barrier is a big no-no.
The test for a possible vapor barrier is to duct tape a 2' square (roughly) piece of poly plastic onto the concrete, completely sealing it to the concrete. Leave it for a few days. Peel it up and look for water droplets on the underside. If water droplets, you need a vapor barrier. If none, you don't. |
Thank you very much. I placed down the test piece of poly last night. I will check it today or tomorrow.....If there is no condesation then dont put a vapor barrier and if there is put one down. Ok thanks for the help......
