Baseboards around fireplace help

I was curious if this would be the proper way to install baseboards and connect it to the trim around the brick behind my fireplace. The pic attached I have the pieces just sitting there, not attached at all yet.
What would in your opinion be the best option here?

Going to be up to you what looks best.
The base does not need to run up on the bricked area like that, it can stop at that bottom step.
Which can be done by making it shorter so it comes out even with the top of the brick, or be ripped and cut with a jig saw so just the top part runs over the bottom step.
