attic carpet

I'd like to put down a carpet in my attic. The floor is 1/2 inch plywood on 16 in centers. The room will only be used as an overflow bedroom at holidays so I don't want to put too much money into it.

Is another 1/2 inch of plywood needed so that someone doesn't end up in the floor below?

What happens to carpet when it is laid down on a floor with no stretching or perimeter carpet strips?

I'm hearing, "Don't scrimp on the carpet pad." Does that still hold in any area that will get very little traffic throughout the years? We're retired and aren't looking for resale value - we just have to please ourselves, but we don't want to be stupid about it.

Suggestions are welcomed.

do not use pad unless you plan on stretching the carpet.
The carpet will eventually wrinkle because of walking and such.

if you desire a loose lay then buy a plush poly carpet and cut to fit without pad.

Lots of people here in AK do it in cabins.

Redline - the joists are 2 x 10s.

Should the floor molding/trim be put down before the carpet is installed. The floor molding will consist of 3 pieces.

I've got a soft spot (maybe two) so I'll cut it (them?) out and replace w/ undamaged plywood before the stilleto dancing elephants arrive.
