Anyone know how carpet is supposed to meet the laminate transition?

I'm laying laminate and just not sure. It looks as though the carpet shouldn't go under the edge of the transition (as I first thought...like it does baseboard). Is it to curl down against the baseboard with the tack strip back a hair, or what?

Yes, thats correct for the baseboard. Where the carpet meets the laminate you will need a transition strip, commonly called a threshold, which covers the carpet and the laminate ends

How does the threshold/transition cover the carpet end (my previous statement was supposed to say "Is it to curl down against the transition with the tack strip back a hair, or what?"). The transition/threshold doesn't actually go over the carpet, does it? The guy at the store said it doesn't, so how is it properly secured.

How wide is this area? I usually just use a few staples to hold the carpet in place and attach the threshold over top. You could also apply some adhesive. Leaving the carpet against the threshold will inevitably result in the carpet fraying.

If you tuck the carpet next to the threshold, the edge of the carpet should have seam sealer applied and then it won't fray.

What is considered the "right" way to do it? The carpet side of the threshold looks like it is supposed to extend all the way to the subfloor. I worry that tucking carpet under it would prop that side of the transition up too high.

There are 2 types of transitions. One is T-shaped and the carpet tucks under the edge. The other is a backwards L- shape and the carpet tucks into a gap between it and the tackstrip.

This one would be the backwards L-shape, since the carpet side extends to the subfloor. So I guess I need to trim the carpet and carefully tuck in between the two.
