For your door trim you could use a plinth block at the bottom as it is thicker than the trim that is applied above it.

Its funny the things people never notice until its a situtaion like this. It was said before most of all the homes I have ever recently seen have had base and quarter over hardwood and if it were already there I'm sure it woudnt be an issue and that's also why I don't ask my wife because these are things the well woman just don't know in my opinion. I definitely agree with going with some different options for your trim. Wouldn't suggest riping wood you'll be there all week. Go to your local hardware store grab so different pieces put them together and make it yours, and sometimes you just have to say honey this is what all wood floors have and maybe take her somewhere and show her a finished product goes some women are visual people they have to see it to understand it.
