5/8" OSB as a subfloor.

I'm planning on installing 3/4" maple hardwood floors on the upper level of my home. The subfloor I discovered when I pulled the carpet is 5/8" OSB. I plan on laying the planks perpendicular to the joists (16" on center). Can I do this? Is the subfloor sufficient? What would I need to add if it's not good enough. I'm hesitant to add more subfloor as it will make the top step of the stairs much different then the the other steps.

Looking for advice,

You're fine, especially since you're installing hardwood. Your instructions should also mention subfloor requirements.

5/8" OSB as a subfloor.

"Acceptable Panel Subfloors: Truss/joist spacing will determine the minimum acceptable
thickness of the panel subflooring.

1. On truss/joist spacing of 16 (406mm) o/c or less, the industry standard for single-panel
subflooring is nominal 5/8 (19/32, 15.1mm) CD Exposure 1 Plywood subfloor panels
(CD EXPOSURE 1) or 23/32 OSB Exposure 1 subfloor panels, 4 X 8' sheets. "
