2004 Trex Decking

I built a house in 2004 and used trex decking at a premium price because I didn't want to paint and pressure wash and it's location is such that those measures shouldn't be needed. Now for some reason the decking next to the house is getting porous and coming apart in 2 locations. One I attributed to a dripping faucet, but the other place has no such issue. It is next to vinyl siding in both places. I guess it's not rot but I would also NEVER recommend this to anyone as the longevity claims made at the time of sale are misleading. Bare untreated cedar would've lasted longer than this stuff.

2004 Trex Decking

jrsky,

Is the deck in an area where it doesn't get much sunlight? I've read that trex can develop mold (inside out) in areas where it doesn't get much sunlight so the moisture won't evaporate off, and will lead to problems.

Sorry to hear you have had bad luck with trex. A friend of mine is a GC, and he swears against the stuff. Doing some googling, it seems there are a lot of lawsuits against trex for issues with their decking material. After doing some research, I'm opting to just stick with good old pressure treated wood for my upcoming deck. At least w/ PT wood, it's cheap and easy to replace boards that go bad.

Call up trex, hopefully they'll work with you on getting the problem resolved..

2004 Trex Decking

FWIW I put in a rather extensive Trex deck at our old house and lived with it for 7 years without a problem. A good sized section of the deck was in perpetual shade on the north side of the house, right up to the siding, in an area that tended to be wet a good part of the time and we never had any problems. We would get black mildew spots peppering that area but I never had any trouble scrubbing those off with some Simple Green once a year.

Based on that limited experience and some of the complaint threads I've read I would chalk up your failure to a batch of defective product and would contact Trex about getting it addressed under warrantee.
