will be installing 1X12 pine in a room that is 17'X20'. the boards will run the 17' length.
my options are:
1) alternate courses of 12' and 5' boards (easy to cut 10'ers in half with almost no waste)
2) stagger 16' and 1' lengths
3) buy all the lengths up to 16' and "randomize it."
4) run a 1X6 all the way around the room and use 16' boards that butts up to it
this will go over 3/4" PTS plywood T&G glued and screwed to 2'OC existing old joists.
pretty much none of the options will have butt joints falling on joists consistently, without a lot of waste and time.
fasteners will be trim head screws through the tongues at 2-4' intervals, and face nailed with 2 1/2" cut nails into joists.
i'm leaning toward option 1.
half the room has a kitchen countertop, so i only need about 10' of staggered boards, and the rest can be 16'ers that die underneath the base cabs, and i can patch it in.
have already ordered the 12s and 10s for the staggered area but can easily change if for some reason this is a bad idea.
