18 guage brad or 15-16 gauge finish nail?

I was wondering whether it made a big difference what should be used when face-nailing hardwood, especially in a high traffic area.

I use 18-gauge to install base and shoe molding, not hardwood flooring. I wouldn't use anything smaller than 16-gauge finish nails, with a preference of 6D galvanized finish nails.

Although I reserve top nailing for out-of-the-way areas (closets, etc.) and think that adhesive for those last couple rows you can't tongue nail may be a better way to go.
