1/2 inch plywood subfloor with particle board underlayment H/W floor installation

I am going to have to make a decision soon on what to do with a house that may have these issues. I have not been able to confirm the thickness of the plywood yet, but from what I am reading this may be what I have. Not sure if I can raise the whole floor 1.5 inches ( 3/4 t&g plus 3/4 hardwood), maybe use 1/2" avantech (a little too thin but better quality maybe with a thinner hardwood 3/8 or 1/2) or scrap the whole idea and go with a floating floor and if so, should I remove the particle board or just go over it? If I am not nailing, any reason to change the underlayment?
