Wheel Chair Ramp to Curved Step
This is a ramp that is to be temporarily used as a removable assisted wheel chair ramp that I built for an acquaintance. The ramp cannot be used as a self propelled wheel chair ramp because the slope is 7° which is more than the maximum ADA slope of ~ 5° (1:12 slope). In this case the 1:12 slope was not possible because the overall ramp length is limited by the room dimensions.
The biggest challenge was devising the transition to the curved step and plush carpet. The solution was to connect the crescent shaped transition piece to the ramp 7° bevel edge, by using pocket screws and Titebond II glue on the bottom side of the ramp.
The biggest asset was building the 32" wide ramp (ADA says s/b 36") using 1-1/8" Sturd-I-Floor Plywood. This is tremendously strong subfloor plywood that is popular here in California.
The biggest aid was using a Festool TS55 saw to rip down the 4x8 1-1/8”,plywood sheets. I also built two shorter ramps for outside. The 1-1/8” thickness is only available in tongue and groove panels, But cutting the sheets with the Festool on the guide rails made it easy cutting. Another plus was cutting the bevels with the TS55.
The ramps were covered with Indoor-Outdoor carpeting from HD
