My Sunday Project - Screen Door

One of the drawbacks (among many) of living in a 70s era mobile home is that the doors are shorter than normal. Screen doors, then, are hard to find.

Good thing I had some mahogany boards laying around. I didn't buy them, of course. They were used to frame a closet in a place I did a teardown on recently. So, no money there.

All joints were done with dowels and a jig I made myself. For something repeatable I'd spend more time on the jig, but it worked.

After some experimentation, I found that one of the blades of my dado stack was the perfect width for the window screen kit rubber dealy-bob stuff to fit in, so I made a channel in the rails and stiles to fit some screen material.

I cut the handles out on my scroll saw and fixed them to a closet dowel I had laying around. More tweaking is required to make the handle work better but hey, it's my first door. Also, it doesn't fit without gaps but it was almost free. Only thing we paid for was the hinges, so I've got a custom made solid mahogany screen for for about $10.

Only a couple pictures, but I can get more once I get a finish on it.

Very nice Mort---I like a wood screen door better than an aluminum one--and yours looks super.

I would be proud to have that door on the front of my house. Nice job on the door handle too. The "M" is a nice touch.
