Chess Table (First attempt with no plans)
I built a table and then it evolved into this.
Is there any interest in the market for a chess table?
Should I make more?
Center drawer (felt lined), Tapered legs, all chess pieces hand turned plus extra Queens.
This is mortise and tenon leg joints with pocket screw suppot. Inlaid wenge and birdseye maple squares in mahogany table with jatoba accent frame. Maple and wenge perimeter inlaid border.
Table top is solid piece, not joined. Variable grain from full cut of tree.
Round over edge with reveal.
Hours are probably significantly more as this is first attempt and one of one.
Milling, routing, cutting and machined time for materials, about 4 hours.
Assembly, inlay and gluing about 6 hours.
Sand and finish (5 coats semigloss laquer) 2 hours plus dry time
Any estimates of REAL sellable value?
Any comments from other crafters?
Any comments about the design or end product?
Send reply to PM if interested
Very nice work. how thick is the table? How thick is the chess board? You're not worried about cracking from seasonable movement of the wood?
table top is 4/4 Mahogany with 3 1/2 sides.
squares are 1/8 strong and glued in pretty well.
Wood inlays haven't shifed in the past.
Sadly,There is a very small market for hand crafted furniture--
Breaking into that little niche is very difficult--Beautiful work---
The chess table is great. I really like it. I've got no idea how is the market for that kind of things but I guess people don't buy one of these every day. Good luck.
