Why is the dishwasher thunking??!?

Help!

It's a GE Profile machine, which is running right now so I can't see the exact model.

Sometime this past year, it started thunking repeatedly as it runs. A couple times, I found "Aha! The rotating water nozzles are hitting something!"

But many times that is not the case at all. I just opened and interrupted it, and spun the top, middle, and bottom water sprayers and looked all around. They hit nothing. I cannot really tell where the sound comes from. At bottom around the base plate it is quite loud, but if I listen up by the vents it could be coming from inside. It is about once every second, more or less.

:furious::huh:

It is driving me NUTS, it is quite annoying, not just a small ticking.

What the heck could this be?

Thanks!

Hmm, drain impeller, maybe? Or possible that valve. The other causes, well, the sound is not continuous, it is definitely periodic.

Definitely check for debri that may be getting knocked around in the pump. If these parts snap together, make sure all are in place and snapped properly.

I found some strange things in one dishwasher I checked out.

Sometimes the water jets will move stuff around.

Had a tech over, he pulled out the baskets. Still thunking. Removing the bottom trim moldings, sounds pretty sure it is coming from the bottom i.e. the motor/pump/etc. He said "don't fix, way too expensive. No panic, you have no leaks."

Maybe I'll have to see if I can find disassembly instructions to clean it out...

Might google 'free appliance manuals'.
