WHIRLPOOL Dryer getting very hot on backside

I have a Whirlpool gas dryer model LGQ8858jQ0. Lately it has been smelling HOT. I checked the Lint trap and it was not obstructed also the Metal duct exiting the house was clear. So that has been ruled out.

Even running a load on Medium heat, The unit smelled very Hot so I pulled it out to have a look. The back panel could not be touched as it was that Hot.

What would be causing this dryer to overheat like this? i am assuming this isnt normal on medium heat???

Thanks

Have you run the lint trap under hot water for a while to remove residual buildup from dryer cloths? Try it, although fro the sound of it you may have something more serious. You do not have a corrugated exhaust pipe right?

tHANKS FOR THE REPLIES.

No corregated flex duct. 1 elbow off the dryer connected to 7' piece of smooth walled duct that exits the house.

The filter and the duct were the 1st things I checked. All nice and clean!

I saw joe's link earlier and was thinking the cycling thermostat.
I switched through the heat cycles- no heat, low, medium, and high heat settings. Even though it was on medium it seemed like a High heat issue- considering how HOT the back of the unit was.

With the back opened up, I turned the dryer on and was able to witness the cycling thermostat was working. On low heat, the burner would cycle on/off as expected once it got to a desired temp.

I put the back back together and ran a load of towels on Medium heat. Seems to be working now. maybe cycling the dial through the settings cleared something up???????

Will continue to monitor
