What's with duo fuel ranges?

We bought a house with a gas range after having electric for 30 years. My wife loves the gas burners, but hates the gas oven. She wants to rip it out and put in a duo fuel.

I just checked at Bestbuy.com. Gas and electric ranges start at $500 and go to $2,000. Duofuel starts at $1,200 and goes to $5,000!

Why are they so freaking expensive? Is there something I am misunderstanding?

You've got both gas and electric controls and components in one unit so it costs more to produce. Dual fuel is the way to go. Gas for the cooktop and electric for the oven.

Double everything.

Buy an electric wall oven and a drop in gas range.
Best reasonable compromise if you have the room.
(I don't)

Yes serious cooks prefer gas stove for quick heat on pans and electric ovens. Electric is more precise for baking. I'm surprised your wife didn't also say electric convection oven.
