Water Softners

Im planning on buying a watersoftner, but just don't know where to begin. I've read articles regarding salt content and how the machine regenerates, but I;m totally confused.

We are 5 in the house. 3 adults and 2 kids. We shower daily, laundry atleast 3 times per week. Dishwasher is used every other day.

Is this enough info to tell me what size maching to get

Once this is determined, what is a very good brand to look at?
