Water softener

Have a water softener that will not shut off & has been running for 12 hours.

Re: Water softener

Hi Lulaboyd. When a water softener is continuously running to drain, it means one of two things has gone wrong. Either the piston is stuck in the 'drain' position, or the seals and spacers (the conduit that the piston moves through) is damaged.

Re: Water softener

Agree. We had the same problem but lucky enough to have it repaired under warrantee. The gears are 'plastic' and when a piston stuck it stripped a gear and the cycle wouldn't advance.

If you're on well and septic your running your pump and loading your septic unnecessarily - if you're on metered water, your adding to your bill. There should be a by-pass control on the unit and/or your plumbing. I'd by-pass the softener and turn it off until repaired.
