Water heater won't light

I followed the directions and can not get the pilot light to light. If I turn on a hot tap I get water out of it. (cold) I have checked the gas lines and the valves are all on. I don't have many details on the make/model right now as I close on Feb. 4th, but I thought this was odd. Any ideas?

Edit: Moved from appliances--M--

A detail or two--Please.

Are you sure there is gas coming to the house?Stove works?

Match light or push button?

Often it will take one minute of holding down the pilot button to purge the air out of the system before the pilot will light.

Let us know as much as you can.---Mike---

Yes gas is coming into the house. The furnace is gas and is right next to the hot water heater. Stove is also gas and works fine. It is a match light not a push button. I will try this when I head to the house today and see if waiting works. Just kept burning myself with the lighter because it was taking too long. Gas was never shut off to the house. All valves are open.

About to have 3 days of wintery mix. Just in time for the move Friday!

Or maybe one of those trigger operated grill lighters. Buying as is?

Mike? These things have thermal couples, I guess, right? If so, maybe that one needs replacing or the position needs to be checked.

Or is that thermal coupling?

Haha, I know it when I see it, jsut not sure what it is called.

I went to the house today, and it lit right up. I guess it just needed to purge the air out. IDK, but it's working now. Thanks for the help.

Boman----I can't spell---and I have the worst memory for names----

I used to bring my secretary to important meetings --just to poke me in the ribs and tell my the names of every one there.

Not good with names here either. And it seems to be getting worse as time passes.

I was going to tell about a recent incident where I ran into someone and it wasn't til a little in the conversation that I realized who they were. But, I can't remember the situation or who it was right now. Had to fake for a minute or so. They seemed familiar ,but............

Now I will wonder about it, until I recall what the heck I am referring to!

Most likely, I will be doing something else, and it will come to me.
