Why wont my washer drain unless i lift the lid to the machine

Model # Serial # top load, front load and some more details would be nice.
Does it go into the spin cycle and the end of the wash?
Do you meen the water just sits there until you open the cover then it drains out or does opening up the cover sends it into the spin cycle?
