washing machine

Whirlpool washer model LSC8244D will go through the wash part of the cycle normally but when it comes time to drain before the rinse cycle it will just stop, the timer does not advance and nothing happens. I have been able to get it to continue by slamming the lid or thumping the washer or the timer area and then it continues.
