Washer Drain Hose

Took an old Roper washer to the hunting cabin ( way out in the woods ) and set it up by laying the drain hose on the ground. Turned it on and the tub will not fill, water went out the drain hose. Is the washer broken or do I need to rig up a standpipe ? I think I need a standpipe but want to make sure. Thanks in advance.

Stand pipe needs to be above the top of the washer.

yes hose needs to be in a stand pipe or above rim of washer to operate right...

Just attaching it to the back of the washing machine with a wire will work.

One more stupid question, Do I need an elbow (trap) on the bottom of the standpipe keeping in mine it will drain on the ground ? I am thinking the trap is only used to keep the gas and smell out of the room when connected in a house.

you are right don't need a trap if just draining to the ground...traps are only for sewer gas....

To prevent overloading the washing machine pump and also to prevent siphoning of the wash tub contents during the wash portion of the cycle, the end of the drain hose must be above the wash tub rim and not sealed or spliced to anything.

They make a syphon breaker that should go into the hose that stick's in the stand pipe or get the hose as high as the tube to prevent syphon of water . this makes a air breake in the line. this is a T the line goes on the long end and the drain goes on the other long end the side piece is the air inlet .

My well and neighbors are 450 ft deep (solid rock) We take water any way we can get it here in South West Texas. Still have an outhouse also . Water is excellent.
