Tapping from fridge

Our fridge has started making a tapping sound. At first I thought it was probably the defroster, but it's been doing it nearly three days now. The sound is kind of like tapping a fingernail on a hollow core door. Taptap. taptap.

It is independent of the compressor, and seems to come from the back.

It's a newish (less than 2 years old) three door Amana with the freezer on the bottom.

My new fridge does this every so often. Read the manual, and it's a normal part of some of the new Energy Star units.

Pretty continuously.

It didn't do it when it was new, and it didn't do it for at least a year, but not it's doing it all the time. Just started maybe a week ago.

remove the bottom drawer so you can access the defrost drain trough (right below evap coil on rear freezer wall) pour about 1/2 cup water into that trough and report back in a day or so.

Tapping from fridge

I poured the water in as directed and haven't heard the noise since. What did I do and what does it mean?

Thanks.
