Side by Side Refrigerator Not Working.

Looked it over and can't get compressor to do anything unless I tap on it, then it will hum for a second and quit. It's a MayTag.:furious:

very possible you have a bad relay on the compressor

Or possibly a bad compressor. How old is the refrigerator?

It's was purchased around 2007. It will work right occasionally. But had to replace it because of loss of food. Want to repair it to try and get some of my money out of it.

Check your warranty. Most are 5 years on compressor but some are 10. Might want to look into a start assist kit for your model.

I tried ordering a starter kit for compressor and all they had was the capacitor it didn't work. What else would be part of a starter kit?

you need the start relay

is there anyway to be 100% sure that the compressor is bad.

Drill a hole in it. That removes all doubt.

The hum and click you describe sounds like too much current going through the thermal OL. Could be:
  1. Insufficient voltage
  2. Bad windings
  3. Locked up compressor
You can measure voltage and ohm out the windings. If those are good then the compressor has seized.

Thanks
