Should the agitator coupling spin freely.in both direction when placed on the trans shaft.

The agitator in my GE washer suddenly stopped working. I have removed the agitator coupling and the teeth don't appear to be worn, however when I put the coupling back on it spins freely. If I lift up slightly the teeth catch. Is this normal?
