Does anyone know if the saltless water softeners are any good. If so, are there particular brands that are better than others?

Well, you can't remove the ions without salt. But the saltless water softeners claim that they reduce/remove the bad effects of the ions with out removing the ions. They only claim to reduce/remove limescale deposits. They apparently can eliminate limescale deposits on your showerhead and faucets and in you appliances, but the effect of the magnetic "excitation" of the limescale wears off after a few hours so it probably won't help the water heater much. It also won't prevent the formation of insoluble compounds, which is why detergents don't work as well in hard water.

If you want/need to avoid sodium, they might be a good alternative. If you don't care about your sodium intake, then a traditional softener does a much better job.

I don't know that much about a softener. We have had one for four years. I was apprehensive about sodium in our drinking water. We have had about six lab tests to check our water after going thru the softener. All tests showed......little or none. I'll see if I can dig up the actual numbers if anyone is interested.

The fresh water rinse of the plastic media takes care of any residual salt.

I looked into these "water softeners" that you're describing several years ago; my research led me to believe that this is pretty much a scam, but do your own research and make your own conclusion.. I don't love the way a normal water softener functions, but I understand the chemistry behind it now and why salt is used.
