Is this normal?

Hi,
I found a cut on the side of the HVAC unit (approximately 6inX6in), where the plenum is. Hot air is blowing through it and obviously it was done by the original installer (I rent this apt.) Is this normal? What is it done for? Should I be concerned about it? Does it endanger my health in any way? Thank you in advance for your help.

How about a picture so we can see what your talking about.
Unless it's a hole in the freon line, or condinsate line there is no danger.
If it's just a hole in the duct work just put a patch of foil duct tape over the hole and forget about it.

Go to your local hardware store and get the heat resistant tape ( will ne shinny aluminum color) and go to town taping up hole cover about 1'' - 2'' excess around area you are covering .

Ps make sure furnace is OFF while you prefrom this task .
