New Kenmore washing machine, automatic water level question

This is a top loader, and just purchased within the last month. It has the automatic water control on it. How does this machine sense how much water should be in the tub? I just put a load of clothes into it, and when it started washing, I opened it up to see how much water was in the tub. There wasn't enough water to even cover the top of the clothes. Water level was about a 1/4 of the tub deep, and clothes were about half a tub deep. Every time I wash a load of clothes, I can open the the door and close it during the wash cycle, and it will add more water, sometimes quite a bit.
I will probably make a service call as it is under warranty, but I am curious as to how this machine sense's how much water should be in the tub.

New Kenmore washing machine, automatic water level question

welcome to the new world of appliances. your owners guide should answer your Q. after first fill [very low] it agitates for a brief time, then based on input from electronic control and flow meter will then fill to what it determines is required. if you lift lid it will then go into default and fill to top. these ain't your Mother's washers anymore.
