Is my refrigerator dying
We have a 13 year old Gibson refrigerator. I can just get the freezer temp to about 28F and about 42F in the fridge, with everything on the coldest setting. Basically the same temps on the warmer settings. No icing on the coil, and the defrost timer works fine. The freezer will just keep ice cubes from melting, (also they feel 'sloppy') and ice cream melts. The compressor sounds like it is running.

Based on my testing of components, cold control, defrost timer, and research, I suspect a low 134A charge or defective compressor. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for your help.

have you taken the evaporator cover off to examine the coil? A properly charged unit will have a light frost pattern covering the entire coil. If it is only partially covered then you are low on refrigerant.

While you have the cover off, I'll bet you'll find half your problem is dust and LINT caked in the coils, vacuum that all out and you'll see a difference.

when the fan went out that blows over the condenser.
Was the difference between frozen ice cream, and something not quite melted .... just give it a min.
Just saying.

Thanks, RWolf That was the first thing I looked at. The condenser is at the back, there is no cover on it, and was fairly clean, but I vacuumed what little dust there was.

Thanks funfool. There is no fan to cool the condensor, just a fan inside the freezer to blow air from the evaporator. It works fine.

Thanks Hardwareman. Yes, when I took the cover off, there was only a little frost on the evaporator down on the bottom corner. So my diagnosis is correct, low on 134A.

While I have AC gauges and repaired several auto ACs, this is a sealed unit, no schrader valves, so I would have to get it serviced. I figured at least a couple of hundred, so I went and bought a new one. The wife is happy again.

Thanks again to all.

Just take your refrigerator to vendor or call them on their home probably they will have the better answer.
