Is my Dishwasher motor frozen? It just humms

Hello All,

Our dishwasher began running very loud a few months ago but would still clean dishes fine. It however stopped working last night.

It will fill with water but instead of starting to wash, it just makes an electrical humming noise. I removed all the internal parts and found no debris. I also had the Parts House check the capacitor and they stated it was good. Therefore, at this time I would assume the motor has simply gone bad/froze up? Would this seem to be the most likely issue?

BTW, as noted: It will fill with water and it will drain if you press cancel. All of the digital button/lights appear to be working fine as well.

Any input would be appreciated.
Ralph

Could be a couple different things. Make and model would help. Thanks.

Go to link and type in your model number and click on repair help for dishwashers.

I have a KitchenAid KUDK03CTSS2

The main pump/motor is model (8535759) or substitute (W10239404). I've since removed the motor/pump and I can rotate the impeller with a little resistance. It doesn't freely spin and I can hear a little grinding noise as I turn it though? It also seems not to rotate consistently, meaning it will rotate slightly harder at times or positions?

Could have some debris in the pump. Did you have a glass break in the dishwasher recently? Lose a small piece off of something you put in the dishwasher? Try turning the pump backwards while holding it upside down to see if you can dislodge something.

Thanks for the input.

As noted, I've cleaned the screen and blade area from within. I then removed the pump motor itself with unit upside down and there is no debris.

It has to be the pump motor! That's what RepairClinic suggests as well.

*The inlet valve works fine, as it will fill with water.
*The drain pump works fine, as it drains fine with cancel.
*The instrument panel appears fully functional. In addition, it would not have had anything to do with the increased operational noise.

The pump motor will not run, it just humms. I'm not an appliance repair man but to me that indicates a bad capacitor or bad motor. The capacitor was tested good so it has to be the motor. The increased noise could have been a bearing going bad which finally failed.

So I will look to replace the motor.

Thanks for your efforts,
Ralph

This makes it a bit confusing. If the pump runs on cancel then it is not bad. or does this machine have two drain pumps?

I would suspect that maybe the hum you hear is a solenoid not fully engaging allowing the next cycle to start

There is a separate drain pump and then a main pump motor. The water inlet valve allows the dishwasher to fill with water. If you press "cancel" the drain pump will then properly drain the water.

It just will not wash, which is the main pumps duty (circulating) but instead it just humms. The most obvious would be that the capacitor went bad which starts the main pump motor. The capacitor tested good however. The next possibility, as I see it, would then be a failed pump motor.

What "solenoid" are you referring to that might not be allowing it to cycle through? Irrespective, a solenoid wouldn't account for the significant increase in operation noise over the last month. So that would seem unlikely unless I've had something additional fail as well...

A main pump motor going bad however would make sense with the noise increase and then eventual failure. When I turn the motor tiny bits of rusted metal falls out, so I assume a bearing or such has failed. Anyhow, everything seems to point to that but I will find out soon when the new unit comes in.

Take care,
Ralph

Isn't anyone going to tell him the motor is humming because it doesn't know the words???
