Millivolts Using A Voltage Meter (Tester)

What would cause a low millivolt reading (with a millivolt/voltage tester) at a gas control valve?

Ash on the thermopile/thermocouple. Sometimes they just burn out from the heat. Could be improperly set (flame needs to surround about 3/8 of the end, this can be double checked with adjustment)

Bad connection between the valve and the 'couple?
Short circuit in the valve?

You can pretty well simulate a 'couple or 'pile with a 1.5v battery and two properly chosen resistors. E.g., for a 750 mV 'pile with an internal resistance of 2.9 ohms, use two 5.6 ohm resistors.
