Microwave interior light stays on and doesn't work

My microwave interior light stays on even when the door is securely closed but you are unable to use microwave. The buttons just beep when programmed. What can cause this?

Sounds like maybe the door switch is bad.

Can you program a cook time? But it won't let yo start? If so, door switch. If you can't program a time....start shopping for a new microwave.

door switch, but I see no reason to replace the entire microwave for a $10 micro switch

It helps to read ALL of the post....

I'll translate....if you can't program the microwave, then most likely an issue with the control board. In which case, it's most likely cheaper to just buy a new microwave.

I love my Emerson MW with it's mechanical timer, NO electronic buttons, I bought it new in 1987 and it works perfectly, even the original bulb is still in it and works :)

The problem sounds like the door switch, and if the switch has a safety interlock circuit (such as washing machine lids have) it will "tell" the brain that the door is not CLOSED properly, and as a result I would imagine it will not allow the MW to start. I vote for the possibility it is the switch.

I think any more comments on our part is a waste of time.....the OP has not been back since posting the question...so they have either fixed the problem or bought a new one.
