Maytag Washer Seizes Up

I have a Maytag Centennial Washer, about 3.5 years old. Here is the issue:

I start the washer and it seems to be doing fine. About 1/3 the way through the cycle before rinsing, the washer seizes up full of water. You can hear it buzzing like it is trying to work, but it will not. It will eventually shut down completely (no buzzing). Moving the dial to different parts of the wash cycle (spin, rinse, regular, etc) and pulling it to start will get the washer to kick like it tries to start but will not and just buzzes. If I screw around with it for a while and keep going back to spin and pulling the button to start, i can get the water to pump out and get the thing spinning. But the clothes werent washed completely or rinsed.

So my wife and I are expecting and recently before this started happening, she was washing the newborn baby clothes (which are tiny). Came out missing a baby sock and glove once the load was done. I pulled the agitator thinking that something may have gotten up there and stuck, but didnt see anything. Could one of these things have made it through the drainage holes? If so, I guess this could be the problem.

Anybody have any idea of what the problem can be? Called Maytag and I came to the conclusion that I am either going to fix it myself or buy a new washer. No point in paying $150+ for a repair, I'd rather buy another one if i can't fix it.

Maytag Washer Seizes Up

my only suggestion would be to pull the pump and see if the sock is down iside there somewheres, if it is it would make the pump jam up and the washer would pretty much stop
