Kitchen Aid Dishwater and dirty Dishes

I have a 1 year old Kitchen Aid Dishwasher and I need to remove the bottom spray arm so that I can get to the internals to remove food debris. There is a lock nut on the arm but I am afraid to put too much pressure I suspect its position adjustment to free it and not a complete screw out to remove.

We find that that top section is not working , glasses are not coming clean. Purchased the cleaning solution from Sears and this helped but still not good.
