Kenmore 70 series washer: whine during spin cycle then stopped during agitate
I've got a 70 series Kenmore washer model 110.26732503. It was making a whining noise during a spin cycle but otherwise seemed OK. My wife put another load in and it stopped while agitating. There was a burning/hot smell coming from it. It's a direct drive so not belt to burn up. I got the cabinet off and there was a ten inch circle of oil underneath and a few drops on the transmission. The oil didn't look like it just leaked, more like it had accumulated over time.
Any thoughts? Bad coupling? Bad transmission?

Update: I pulled the pump off and the washer spun when I put it on a spin cycle. I then took the hoses off the pump and looked inside and found a baby sock stuck in there. I pulled it out and put the pump back on and the washer spun. I didn't let it fill to see if it would agitate because I didn't want to have to drain it again.
Is it in my best interest to replace the clutch or coupler since I have it apart? Or should I reassemble and give it a shot?
