Icemaker

This has probably been addressed before but I have a question about our icemaker.

For several months the thing has made ice when it wants to, sometimes going days without making any, sometimes seeming to work overtime. If I raise and lower the shut-off bar, I can make the ice cube pusher thing cycle and it makes a noise like a solenoid tripping and sometimes you can hear water running in. I'm sitting here in the quiet with the baby, who is sleeping thank goodness, and have noticed that I can hear that clicking from time to time like it's trying to fill with water. It did that several times and then finally I could hear the thing fill with water.

Is something freezing or maybe clogged up? We have excellent water with very little depositing. The unit is a GE, I think about 7 years old, freezer over fridge.

Water Solenoid Valve may be stuffed or just blocked with some debris....Remove valve and clean out if possible ... if still persists, then coil could be getting weak....

Where in the mechanism would I find it and do I need to remove the whole unit?

not sure on your fridge, do you have an exploded diagram? it will be most likely behing the panel where the ice despenser is...If it was me i would just start ripping the thing to bits till i found it... you may need to find out some more info on the fridge on line first..depending how good you are with the tools you may need a service man out for this....
