Horrible dishwasher interior

In a old house we are looking at, the dishwasher looks bad. The interior of the dishwasher is covered with white deposits everywhere. It smells bad. It starts, but we haven't run it through a complete cycle yet.
What could have done this to a dishwasher? Our own dishwasher is 2 years old and it has no white deposits anywhere. Also it doesn't smell. Apparently it is a good brand name, Bosch or something like that.
Is this dishwasher that comes with this old house salvageable?

Thanks

Sure sign your going to need to treat the water and may have other plumbing issues in the future. That same mineral is going to be on the insides of the pipes, faucets, water heater, toilet flush valves.
It's what's in the water, not the dish washer that's the problem.

A few of the first things I look at when looking to buy a home are the roof, foundation, wiring, plumbing.
There 4, of the most expensive things to replace or repair.
Old houses with old steel pipes will all leak and close upon the inside at some point and need to be replaced.
Old knob and tube wiring still in place, 60 amp. fuse panels will mean it's all got to be replaced and you may not even be able to buy insurance.
Hirer your own home inspector, never ever use the one the realtor refers you to!!

Well water?
What Joe said.
Plan on adding a good water softener system.

I have also found these mineral deposits caked thick in the toilet bowl, all the way into the inside beyond the self contained P trap.
