Garage Door opener question

Apologies if this is best suited for another category....

Ran in to some issues with the garage door opener at one of my properties yesterday. It's an old Craftsman opener (mid-80's?), don't have the model number at the moment.

When I initially was checking remotes before new tenants moved in, neither worked. The door itself opens just fine with the wall-mounted control. Played around with them more, put in new batteries, etc. Found out that the remotes do work, but they have to be really close to the receiver. Within 3 feet they work somewhat regularly, work even better within a few inches. Jumpers are still set in the proper positions, LED indicators on the remotes light up strong and bright.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

some model door openers have an antena wire hanging from the opener unit itself. If that was removed or damaged it can affect the operation.

This model has a separate receiver box that is plugged in the ceiling-mounted receptacle right next to the opener. It's still working and picking up signal from the remote, just not from more than 6 feet away
