Fridge compressor noise

In the middle of the night 10 days ago it sounded like the cover had been taken off the top of our 4 year old refrigerator's compressor. I could clearly hear the pistons or scroll suckin and pluckin loud and clear. Kinda like a gas powered model airplane engine. Noisy enough to send the cats running to the basement. Don't know how long the noise had been going on, but it stopped that morning and hasn't returned in 10 days and counting.

When I heard the noise, I lifted the wire for the ice demand. I figured I had to do something. The racket didn't stop when I did that, but some time later it did. Could ice demand be the cause? How could such a serious sound just go away like that?
