is it necessary to vent an electric free standing range? If so there are no overhead cabinets to attach a vent hood to, and the overhead freestanding vents are cost prohibitive for me. Help ASAP
For typical residential ranges (as opposed to higher BTU "commercial" cooking equipment) no vent is required by the IRC:
For gas ranges:
The following appliances shall not be required to be vented: 1. ranges
Where the appliances and equipment are installed so that the aggregate input rating exceeds 20 Btu per hour per cubic foot of volume of the room space in which the appliance is installed, one or more shall be provided with a venting system or other approved means for conveying the vent gases to the outdoor atmosphere...
But if one is installed, there are some code requirements that must be met.
That said, it can get pretty messy above cooking equipment if none is installed.
I don't think there's any code about having an exhaust in a kitchen, but I could be wrong. It's nice to have, but not the end of the world if you don't.
I may be wrong on this though.
