Electric furnace

I came home today to find my heater didnt turn off at the desired temp on the thermostat. I checked the thermostat and it is on auto. I turned it off at the thermostat and it still wouldnt turn off, so I turned it off at the breaker. After about 3 hours I turned it back on and it started working again. Can anyone tell me what it could be. Thanks
