DW soap dish door not opening

In reading one of the other posts, I realized that we are having the same problem. We have a Kitchen-Aid dishwasher, close to 24 years old. Neither of the little soap dispenser doors will open. We just put the soap in one side without closing the little doors, but that means we can't do a two stage wash, and the single wash we do get probably could be better. The price to replace these soap dispensers is enough that we would probably buy a new DW instead. But it there was a reasonably easy fix, I'd be inclined to try it. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

The doors won't open automatically, during the wash cycle, or they won't open at all to load detergent?
