dryer screeches when started

we have a maytag neptune intellidry that screeches (sounds like metal on metal). the sound goes away completely after a while, and the drier is drying and spinning the clothes, but the sound is extreme upon start-up. any suggestions?

If you Google the make and Model # lots of self help parts breakdowns and trouble shooting guides come up.

i have only fixed one dryer and it did the same thing. mine was a little plastic idler pulley that had worn out. i replaced the belt at the same time. but like joe said get a diagram of the parts and how they go together first.

you will have to disassemble the dryer to find out whether you have a bad idler pulley or rear roller. One of them is rusty and dry, do not let it go to long or it will lead to further problems.
