Dirty dishes

Our dishwasher is at least 7 years old.
Now for us to get clean dishes we have to use the "hot start option"
And when we have dishes on the top rack, like cups, there is a film of dirt, food on top of the cups. It is almost like the top sprayer is not working.
But since the front panel is not see thru, I can not tell.
What troubleshooting can I do to fix my problem.
Thanks
Barry

What brand/model of dishwasher do you have? When mine does that, it is because the upper sprayer arm is clogged with food particles. On my particular model, that sprayer arm can be removed and I can rinse it out & use tweezers to grab the food particles stuck in the holes of the sprayer arm.

spray arm plugged, pump filter dirty or plugged, not getting enough water. Could be a number of things, check the spray arm and filter first.
