Culligan Mark 89 water softener problem

Under the manual re-charge lever, there is a brass plate which is about an inch long and one-quarter inch wide. It is now broken off and laying in the housing. The softener doesn't recycle on automatic setting. So, I'm wondering if I can use the manual setting until the plate is replaced.
