Craftsman air compressor motor spurts at higher pressures

I have a Compressor, 1.5 HP, 2 gal, 125 psi, electric. It will build up to 50-70 psi and then motor begins to labor, spurt and then stop, It just started this. Changing the regulator does not help.

Sounds like it is still building pressure, but that it in the head, rather than sending it to the tank. I would start with the check valve, if so equipped, which would be located in the line from the head to the tank, and if not that, it's most likely a bad valve in the head.
