conversion to natural gas

I have a ao smith promax model#FCG 40-247 circa 1999 that was originally installed for propane...now am converting to natural gas. Can this unit be converted? My contractor says no but I think he just wants to sell me a new one.

Why would you not contact A.O. Smith on this one?

Sure it can be converted. But is it worth it? If its already 12+ years old chances are its not.

Has it been taken care of properly? Drained every year? Is the heat exchangers in good shape? Top many variables. Easier and much less time consuming for the contractor to get a new one, not to mention liability.
