my clothes dryer is very hot to the touch on the outside casing of the dryer. What could this be?

Check to make sure that your vent is clear. Could cause overheating if it is.

The thermostats can get out of calibration. It was suggested to me years ago to dry most loads on medium or low setting and use the high very rarely.

it may be your vent. if it's an electric dryer the htr may be shorted to ground. this is a potenialy unsafe condition. i wouldn't use it until it's checked out.
