Can you stack washer/dryer that are different models from the same brand?

Our dryer is ancient and will probably die anyday. The washer is fine. If we buy a front loading stackable dryer and wait a couple of years to buy a washer that's the same brand, can we stack them? Or do they have to be matching model numbers?

How about across different brands? Is there some kind of universal stacking kit that works for all brands?
